I remember working with a husband and wife who wanted to make a difference by supporting the organization their daughter was involved with. Their daughter struggled with learning disabilities that prevented her from realizing her full independence, including making friends and getting a job. Her parents involvement began to grow through opportunities like taking a behind the scenes tour of program activities.
The awareness of how their daughter and others were building skills, confidence, and independence led to them making small gifts to support the mission. Over the years, they increased their support through multiple gifts, including an estate gift, strengthening their commitment. What made it meaningful for them was the self-sufficiency their daughter and others were achieving - equipping them to participate more fully in the community.
That’s why I do what I do.
